What is age assurance?
Definition
Law and privacyAge assurance
Age assurance means estimating or verifying a user's age, so a service can apply the right rules for minors.
Why it matters for schools
It is getting stricter. California's AB 1043, operative Jan 1, 2027, makes app developers request an age-bracket signal from the operating system or app store, and treats the signal as actual knowledge of age range. In February 2026 the FTC said it will not bring COPPA cases over data collected solely to verify age, if it is used only for that and deleted promptly. OpenAI added age prediction in January 2026.
In schools
In a school product, the most reliable age signal is the school's roster. In a Nexus pilot, age comes from the school's roster, not from the student.
