What is a randomized controlled trial?
Definition
EvidenceRandomized controlled trial
A randomized controlled trial (RCT) assigns participants or classes to groups by chance, so a difference in outcomes can be attributed to the intervention.
Why it matters for schools
It is the strongest everyday test of cause. The clearest AI evidence for schools comes from RCTs: a field experiment with about 1,000 high-school students, and a two-year cluster-randomized trial in 18 middle schools. By contrast, PISA's AI findings are correlations, and the 26,811-student study in China is a working paper that was not randomized. Ask which kind of study sits behind any claim.
