What is retrieval practice?
Definition
Learning scienceRetrieval practice
Retrieval practice is learning by recalling information from memory, as in a quiz or a self-test, rather than rereading notes or looking up the answer.
Why it matters for schools
It is one of the best-supported practices in education: classroom quizzing improves learning, g = 0.50 across 222 studies (Yang et al., 2021). Work done with AI open is not retrieval practice, because the answer comes from the tool, not from memory.
In practice
Use short, low-stakes quizzes that students answer without help. AI can write practice questions; students should answer them alone, then check. In a pilot, unaided rechecks a week after practice double as retrieval practice and as evidence of what students can do.

Questions and answers
What is an example of retrieval practice?
A five-question quiz at the start of class on last week's material, answered from memory.
Can AI help with retrieval practice?
AI can generate practice questions and give feedback afterward. The recall itself must be unaided.
How strong is the evidence for retrieval practice?
Classroom quizzing improves learning, g = 0.50 across 222 studies (Psychological Bulletin, 2021).
