Nexus for district leaders
How districts are vetting student AI in 2026, what a review will ask any vendor, and where Nexus stands on agreements, sign-in, grade levels and evidence.

Where districts are now
Most districts are deciding case by case. In CoSN's 2026 survey of district technology leaders, 79% had AI guidelines, up from 57% in 2025; 49% took a case-by-case stance on AI, 30% said they embrace it, 19% were undecided and 1% banned it. 86% vet tools before use, 65% require IT review and 61% keep an approved-app list.
A second wave of restrictions began in 2026. New York City paused student-facing generative AI in pre-K to grade 8, and Los Angeles Unified paused it on district devices for all students. On Oct 7, 2026, Frederick County Public Schools' board voted 6-1 to ban student AI use from pre-K through grade 12. Howard County, Maryland went the other way and gave all its high school students Gemini from Jan 27, 2026, after an AI literacy lesson.
What a district review will ask
- A signed data privacy agreement. Many districts use the Student Data Privacy Consortium's National Data Privacy Agreement.
- State student-data law that binds the vendor, such as California's SOPIPA, New York's Education Law 2-d, Illinois's SOPPA or Maryland's Education Article 4-131.
- FERPA's school-official terms and parents' right to inspect records.
- PPRA, which bars analyses of protected areas, such as mental health or family life, without written parental consent.
- CIPA, for E-rate districts: filters for obscene and harmful images, and an internet safety policy.
- Provider terms for minors, and who holds the provider account.
Where Nexus stands for districts
We will sign your data privacy agreement or the National Data Privacy Agreement. Nexus is for students 13 and older, so it fits high schools, not elementary or most middle grades. Sign-in uses Google; Microsoft sign-in, SAML, Clever, ClassLink and OneRoster are not available yet, so a district pilot starts with accounts set up by enrollment or invitation. Nexus is preparing its first pilots, so there is no Nexus outcome evidence yet.
Equity is a district question
Blocks fall hardest on students without their own devices. 78% of teens in households under $30,000 have a home desktop or laptop, against 93% in households at $75,000 or more. Training is uneven too: in fall 2024, 67% of low-poverty districts had trained teachers on AI, against 39% of high-poverty districts. An approved AI gives every student in an approved class the same models, whether or not their family pays for an AI subscription. Whether that changes learning is something a pilot should measure.
Timing
New paid lines for fall usually need to be in the budget by spring. In Maryland, each county board submits its budget at least 45 days before local taxes are levied. Plan a pilot early enough that its readout can inform the budget.
