[ SUMMARY ]
The short version
Teens already use ChatGPT for schoolwork, and a school cannot set or see what happens in the consumer app. ChatGPT for Teens adds study defaults, but they are defaults a teen can leave. If you block consumer AI, or want to, Nexus is the approved route: the class sets the learning mode and the student cannot turn it off.
How students use ChatGPT today
54% of US teens have used AI chatbots for schoolwork, and 10% do all or most of their schoolwork with chatbot help (Pew Research Center, Feb 2026). 63% of teens who use AI for schoolwork get answers from it, and 39% feel they miss out on learning (Common Sense Media, Aug 2026).
Blocking ChatGPT on school networks moves that use rather than stopping it. 44% of teens who use AI for schoolwork have had an AI tool blocked on a school network or device, and 59% of those used a personal device instead.
What ChatGPT for Teens changes
OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens on Aug 18, 2026 for users 13 to 17, with Study Mode, homework nudges and Study Hours, which set new chats to study mode by default but do not block ChatGPT. Parents cannot read teen chats, and schools have no role. Parents can opt into notices about acute distress.
Common Sense Media rated ChatGPT for Teens "Unacceptable risk" on Oct 7, 2026, and OpenAI disputes the method. In Common Sense's tests, Study mode offered "Show me the answer" in 43-90% of responses, and deleting "@study" let it finish 100% of the assignments it was given.
Free and paid ChatGPT are different products
Free ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's smallest Luna models. The $20-a-month Plus plan adds GPT-6 Sol reasoning. Students whose families pay get stronger reasoning at home; students on the free tier do not. In Nexus, every student in an approved class gets the same models, whether or not their family pays for an AI subscription.
What a school can and cannot control
| Item | Consumer ChatGPT (including ChatGPT for Teens) | Nexus |
|---|---|---|
| Learning rules | Study defaults a teen can leave | A class learning mode (Hints, Guided, or Full answer with critique) students cannot change |
| What teachers see | Nothing; schools have no role | Class chats, with notice to students; personal chats are not shown to teachers |
| Models | OpenAI's, by plan tier | Approved by your school per class |
| Spending | Each family's own plan | Daily spending limits per school and per student |
| Age terms | 13 and older with a parent's permission | Students 13 and older, enrolled by the school |
If your school blocks ChatGPT
Blocks are common in some places and rare in others. In December 2024, 8% of AP high schools blocked all generative AI on their network, and 14% allowed only school-sponsored tools; 55% had no network restriction. Where a school does block consumer AI, students still need a place to get help. An approved AI with class rules gives them one. Read should schools block ChatGPT? for the evidence on both sides.

Questions and answers
Can high school students use ChatGPT?
OpenAI's terms allow users 13 and older with a parent's permission, and ChatGPT for Teens serves users 13 to 17. Whether students may use it for schoolwork is your school's decision.
Can a school see what students do in ChatGPT?
Not in the consumer app. Schools have no role in ChatGPT for Teens, and parents cannot read teen chats. Some web filters log prompts on school devices; see our page on AI monitoring in web filters.
Is ChatGPT's study mode enough for school?
Study mode is a default a teen can leave. Common Sense Media found it offered "Show me the answer" in 43-90% of responses (Oct 2026). A school-set learning mode that students cannot change is a different control.
What is the difference between free ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus?
Free ChatGPT runs on OpenAI's smallest Luna models. The $20-a-month Plus plan adds GPT-6 Sol reasoning (OpenAI, read Oct 18, 2026).
What should we use instead of ChatGPT for students?
If you block consumer AI, or want to, Nexus is the approved route: models your school approves, a learning mode per class that students cannot change, and teacher review of class chats.
