Acceptable use policy

An acceptable use policy (AUP) is a school's written rules for using technology. An AI acceptable use policy covers which AI tools students and staff may use, and how.

Why it matters for schools

Policies only work if students understand them, and many do not: 35% of teens who use AI for schoolwork do not understand their school's AI rules. A strong AI policy pairs school-wide rules on approved tools, privacy and safety with an AI level on each assignment, so students know what is allowed tonight.
