What is AI disclosure?
Definition
Policy and practiceAI disclosure
AI disclosure has two meanings in schools: a product telling users they are talking to an AI, and a student stating how they used AI on an assignment.
Why it matters for schools
Product disclosure is becoming a legal and contractual requirement. California's SB 243 requires AI disclosure for companion chatbots, New York requires notice at the start and every three hours for AI companions, and Anthropic's guidelines for organizations serving minors require telling users they are talking to an AI. Student disclosure is a policy choice: a short note on which tool, what for, and what the student did.
In practice
For student disclosure, two sentences are enough: "I used [tool] for [what]. The [answers or writing] are my own." See the student AI agreement.
