AI detector

An AI detector is software that estimates whether a piece of text was written by AI.

Why it matters for schools

Detectors misjudge real students. Seven detectors flagged on average 61% of essays by non-native English writers as AI-written, in a study of 91 TOEFL essays. Yet in 2023-24, 68% of teachers of grades 6-12 used AI detectors, and 64% reported students disciplined over generative AI.

Better evidence

Use process evidence instead: drafts, version history, in-class work, a conversation with the student. Nexus does not detect AI-written work; class chats show how a student worked.
