Evidence

Early-warning system

An early-warning system uses data such as attendance, grades and behavior to flag students who may need support.

Why it matters for schools

Results are mixed. In a trial in 73 high schools, chronic absence was 10% against 14% and course failure 21% against 26%, with no change in low GPA, suspensions or credits. Wisconsin's dropout system was wrong about 74% of the time when it predicted a student would not graduate on time, with higher false-alarm rates for Black and Hispanic students, and the label had no significant effect on graduation. AI tools that flag students inherit the same risks.

What does this mean for AI that flags students?
