Human in the loop is a design in which a person reviews, approves or acts on AI output before it affects someone.
Why it matters for schools
Some of the clearest AI gains in education come from AI that helps a person. In a randomized trial with 900 tutors and 1,800 K-12 students, students whose tutors had AI advice were 4 points more likely to master topics (preprint). Testing standards also say that a decision with major impact on a student should not rest on a single score; an AI flag is not a decision.
In practice
Put a person between any automated flag and any action: a teacher before a grade, a counselor before outreach, a team before a placement.
