What is an AI hallucination?
Definition
AI conceptsHallucination
An AI hallucination is a false statement an AI model makes with confidence, such as an invented quotation, citation, date or fact.
Why it matters for schools
AI errors are common enough to plan for. In one high-school math study, an older GPT-4 answered the practice problems correctly about half the time when unguarded; with the teacher's solution in its prompt, it rarely erred. Grounding helps, but no model is error-free, so students need to check.
In practice
Teach students to confirm every quotation, statistic and citation in the original source, and to treat agreement between two models as a reason to check, not proof.

Questions and answers
What is an AI hallucination?
A confident false statement from an AI, such as an invented source or fact.
How can students catch AI hallucinations?
Check every quotation, number and citation in the original, and ask what supports each claim.
Do better models hallucinate less?
Usually, but none is error-free. Giving a model the correct source material also reduces errors.
