What is retrieval-augmented generation?
Definition
AI conceptsRetrieval-augmented generation
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a technique in which an AI first retrieves relevant documents, such as class materials, and then answers using them, often with citations.
Why it matters for schools
Grounding an AI in the right material can cut errors: in a high-school math study, an AI given the teacher's solution in its prompt rarely erred, while the unguarded version often did. Retrieval can still miss the right passage or cite it loosely, so students should open the cited source and check that it says what the answer claims.

Questions and answers
What is RAG in simple terms?
An AI looks up relevant documents first and answers from them, often citing them.
Does RAG stop AI hallucinations?
It reduces them when the right material is found, but it does not eliminate them.
Why does RAG matter for schools?
It can keep answers tied to approved class materials instead of the open web.
