What is hint-first tutoring?
Definition
Learning scienceHint-first tutoring
Hint-first tutoring is an approach in which an AI or a tutor offers hints and questions before, or instead of, a full answer.
Why it matters for schools
In a field experiment with about 1,000 high-school students, answer-giving AI cut unaided exam scores by 17%, and a hint-first version of the same AI removed that harm, but it did not beat no AI. A coach-only tutor in a two-year trial gained about 0.06-0.08 SD a year, similar to practice without AI. Hint-first prevents harm; gains need structure and teaching.
In Nexus
In Nexus, a class set to Hints is designed to respond this way, and students cannot change the class's mode.

Questions and answers
Does hint-first AI improve learning?
It prevented harm in a field experiment but did not beat no AI. Gains came from structure and teaching.
What is the difference between hint-first and Socratic tutoring?
They overlap: both ask questions before giving answers. Hint-first describes the order of help.
Can students game hint-first tutors?
Some ask for hint after hint until the answer appears. Watch for rapid repeated requests.
