Mandated reporting

Mandated reporting is the legal duty of educators and other professionals to report suspected child abuse or neglect to the authorities.

Why it matters for schools

AI chats can trigger the duty. In Maryland, educators who have reason to believe a child is abused or neglected must report it orally as soon as possible and in writing within 48 hours, and must tell the head of the school. If teachers can read class chats, a disclosure in a chat can put a mandated reporter on notice. Decide in advance who sees such messages and how fast.
