Safety escalation

A safety escalation route is how a message that suggests a student may be in danger reaches a trained person at school, and what happens next.

Why it matters for schools

Every school-sold student AI we reviewed routes safety alerts to an adult. A good route is narrow and human: a separate safety check, a short reply that names 988 and the school's counselor, a named contact with hours and a backup, a person who reviews each flag before anyone reaches out, no automatic police contact, and abuse disclosures handled through mandated reporting.

In Nexus

Nexus is a study assistant, not a counselor. Before any student uses Nexus at your school, we set up a safety route with you.

Questions and answers

What should happen when a student tells an AI about self-harm?

The AI should point to 988, emergency help and a trusted adult, and route the message to a person the school named, who reviews it before outreach.

Who should receive AI safety flags?

A trained counselor or designee, with a backup and written hours, not every teacher.

Should AI contact police automatically?

No. A person should review each flag, and staff decide on any emergency call.
