What is productive failure?
Definition
Learning scienceProductive failure
Productive failure is a teaching approach in which students attempt a problem before they are taught how to solve it, then learn from the gap between their attempt and the method.
Why it matters for schools
Problem solving before instruction gave g = 0.36 across studies, and 0.37-0.58 when done faithfully, but the effect reversed for grades 2-5 (Sinha and Kapur, 2021). It suits teenagers, which supports asking high school students for an attempt before AI explains. AI explanations also helped most for people who tried the problem first (Kumar et al., 2023).
In practice
Add a class instruction such as "Ask for the student's attempt before giving a hint," and keep the attempt gate quick.

How does productive failure apply to AI?
Ask students to attempt a problem before the AI explains. AI explanations helped most for people who tried first.
