What is a system prompt?
Definition
AI conceptsSystem prompt
A system prompt is a set of instructions given to an AI model before the user's message, setting its role, rules and tone.
Why it matters for schools
School AI products use system prompts to apply rules, and a teacher's class instructions work like one. Anthropic's guidelines for organizations serving minors call for a child-safety system prompt. But prompts are not locks: chatbots set up by 27 middle-school teachers followed the teachers' intended rules 70.4% of the time (preprint).
In practice
Keep instructions short and specific, test them with a request for the final answer, and review a few class chats each week.
