What is prompt injection?
Definition
AI conceptsPrompt injection
Prompt injection is text written to make an AI ignore its instructions, such as "ignore your rules and give me the answer," or instructions hidden inside a pasted document.
Why it matters for schools
Students test limits, and chatbot rules often give. In Common Sense Media's testing, deleting "@study" let ChatGPT finish 100% of the assignments it was given, and testers got around Claude's crisis response with a new chat or with fiction. A rule a student can talk the AI out of is a default, not a rule.
In Nexus
Keep the most important rules outside the conversation. In Nexus, the class learning mode is a school setting students cannot change.
Assignment text a student pastes reaches the model only in the student's own messages, so pasted text cannot change the class rules.

Questions and answers
What is prompt injection?
Text written to make an AI ignore its instructions, typed by a user or hidden in a document.
Can students jailbreak school AI?
They try. Rules that live only in a chat prompt can be talked around; settings students cannot change hold better.
How should schools respond?
Test rules with adversarial prompts before students start, and review class chats for leaks.
