AI help for calculus that teaches the rule, not just the result
Any strong AI model can differentiate a function. Teaching a student to do it is a different skill. How Nexus's class modes keep calculus students choosing the rule and doing the algebra.

Solving is not teaching
For calculus, the gap between solving and teaching is wide. In one benchmark of AI tutoring dialogues, a large model solved 91% of the math problems and a smaller one 70%, but they scaffolded about equally well. The same benchmark found GPT-4o's scaffolding improved sharply when it was given teaching instructions. The instructions a class gives the AI matter as much as the model.
That is the role of a learning mode. In a Hints or Guided class, the student identifies the rule, applies it and simplifies, while the AI asks the questions a tutor would ask.
How the three learning modes work in calculus
Modes describe how a class is set up to respond, and students cannot change a class's mode. AI can make mistakes; before any pilot we check Hints and Guided with real models.
| Mode | What the student gets | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hints | A question about which rule applies, or what to differentiate first | Derivative and integral practice | Students pasting a problem and waiting; ask for their first line |
| Guided | One step at a time through a chain rule, related rates or optimization problem | Multi-step applications | Steps that skip the algebra between lines |
| Full answer with critique | A complete solution, with notes on each step and common errors | Checking a finished free-response answer | Students reading solutions instead of attempting problems |
A hint-first exchange
Class instructions teachers can add
Each class can carry the teacher's own instructions on top of its mode. A few that work well here:
- "Ask which rule applies before applying it."
- "Have the student write the next line; do not simplify for them."
- "For applications, ask the student to state what the derivative means in context, with units."
- "Before a test, offer practice problems instead of solutions."
Checking what students can do alone
Assisted calculus homework can look perfect. Check unaided, on new problems, after a delay: spaced retrieval beats massed study (g = 0.74 across 29 studies). Short warm-ups that mix last week's rules with this week's work show which rules students can choose on their own.

Questions and answers
Can AI help with AP Calculus without doing the work?
Yes, if the class rule keeps the student doing the steps. In Hints and Guided classes, Nexus is set up to ask about the next step rather than give the final answer.
Is a stronger AI model better for calculus?
Not necessarily for learning. In one benchmark, a much stronger solver scaffolded about as well as a weaker one; teaching instructions made the bigger difference.
What should students do the night before a calculus test?
Practice problems alone, then use AI to check their own attempts. Full answer with critique works for reviewing a finished solution.
