AI help for chemistry that keeps the units and the reasoning
Stoichiometry, equilibrium and lab reports all reward the same habit: show each step with its units. How Nexus's class modes keep that habit with the student.

Where AI helps, and where it gets in the way
Chemistry problems chain conversions, and a student who lets AI do the chain never learns where the mole ratio comes from. On PISA 2025, students who used AI to draft, summarize or research scored lower in science than non-users, while students who used AI as a general learning aid scored about the same. That is a correlation, not proof, but it points the same way as the experiments: how students use AI matters more than whether they do.
A hint-first class asks the questions a chemistry teacher asks: Is the equation balanced? What is the ratio? What are the units?
How the three learning modes work in chemistry
Modes describe how a class is set up to respond, and students cannot change a class's mode. AI can make mistakes; before any pilot we check Hints and Guided with real models.
| Mode | What the student gets | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hints | A question about the next conversion, such as "What is the mole ratio?" | Stoichiometry, gas laws, equilibrium practice | Students skipping units; ask for them at each step |
| Guided | One step at a time through a multi-step calculation or a lab analysis | Limiting reagent problems, titrations, lab reports | Accepting a number without checking it is reasonable |
| Full answer with critique | A complete solution, with a critique of the method and units | Checking a finished lab calculation | Using it before the student has balanced the equation |
A hint-first exchange
Class instructions teachers can add
Each class can carry the teacher's own instructions on top of its mode. A few that work well here:
- "Ask the student to balance the equation before any calculation."
- "Require units at every step."
- "Ask whether the answer is reasonable before confirming it."
- "For lab reports, give feedback on the student's analysis; do not write the conclusion."
Checking what students can do alone
Give short unaided problems with new numbers a few days after practice. Classroom quizzing improves learning (g = 0.50 across 222 studies), and spacing helps more than cramming (g = 0.74 across 29 studies). In lab weeks, ask students to explain one calculation aloud: a spoken explanation is hard to outsource.

Questions and answers
Can AI help with stoichiometry without giving the answer?
Yes. In a Hints class, Nexus is set up to ask about the balanced equation, the mole ratio and the units, so the student does each conversion.
Should students use AI to write lab reports?
Not to write them. A Guided class can help a student structure the analysis, and Full answer with critique can review a finished calculation.
Does AI use hurt science learning?
On PISA 2025, students who used AI to draft, summarize or research scored lower in science, and students who used it as a learning aid scored about the same. That is a correlation.
