AI help for reading comprehension without the shortcut summary
The fastest way to skip a reading assignment is to ask AI for a summary. How Nexus's class modes keep students reading, finding evidence and stating the main idea themselves.

Summaries are the shortcut to watch
US reading scores were falling before ChatGPT: NAEP 2024 grade 12 reading was 10 points below 1992 and 3 points below 2019. AI adds a new risk on top. In seven experiments with 10,462 adults, people who learned from AI summaries ended up with shallower knowledge than people who used web links. On PISA 2025, students who used AI to draft, summarize or research scored lower in science than non-users; that is a correlation, not proof.
The skill a reading class builds is the one a summary skips: finding the main idea and the evidence for it.
How the three learning modes work in reading comprehension
Modes describe how a class is set up to respond, and students cannot change a class's mode. AI can make mistakes; before any pilot we check Hints and Guided with real models.
| Mode | What the student gets | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hints | A question that sends the student back to the text: "Which sentence supports that?" | Main idea, inference, evidence questions | Requests to summarize the whole text |
| Guided | One step at a time: annotate, find the claim, find the evidence, explain | Close reading and text-dependent writing | The AI quoting evidence the student should find |
| Full answer with critique | A complete response with a critique of its use of evidence | Reviewing a finished response | Using it before the student has read the text |
A hint-first exchange
Class instructions teachers can add
Each class can carry the teacher's own instructions on top of its mode. A few that work well here:
- "Do not summarize assigned texts. Ask the student to summarize first, then give feedback."
- "Ask the student to quote the evidence before explaining it."
- "For vocabulary, ask the student to guess from context before defining."
- "Keep questions tied to the text the student pasted."
Checking what students can do alone
Short unaided reading checks on a new passage show the skill directly: one main-idea question and one evidence question take five minutes. Classroom quizzing improves learning, g = 0.50 across 222 studies. In class chats, a pattern of summary requests on assigned reading tells a teacher who is skipping the text.

Questions and answers
Is it OK for students to use AI summaries of assigned reading?
It skips the skill. In seven experiments with adults, people who learned from AI summaries ended up with shallower knowledge than people who used web links. In a Hints class, Nexus is set up to send students back to the text.
Can AI help struggling readers?
It can ask the questions a reading teacher asks and give feedback on the student's own summary. The student should still do the reading.
Were reading scores falling before AI?
Yes. NAEP 2024 grade 12 reading was 10 points below 1992 and 3 points below 2019.
