AI for SAT and ACT prep: practice that sticks
Test prep rewards practice done alone and spaced over time. How Nexus's class modes keep students solving, and how to use AI to review mistakes after an attempt.
[ SAT AND ACT PREP ]
What the research says works for test prep
Two of the strongest findings in learning science fit test prep exactly. Classroom quizzing (retrieval practice) improves learning, g = 0.50 across 222 studies. Spaced retrieval beats massed study, g = 0.74 across 29 studies. Feedback improves learning too, d = 0.48 across 435 studies, with wide variation.
The test is taken without AI, so practice that leans on AI can mislead. Students using answer-giving AI in one field experiment overrated how much they had learned. The right sequence is attempt, check, then review the mistake with help.
How the three learning modes work in SAT and ACT prep
Modes describe how a class is set up to respond, and students cannot change a class's mode. AI can make mistakes; before any pilot we check Hints and Guided with real models.
| Mode | What the student gets | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hints | A question that points to the concept the item tests | Timed sets reviewed afterward; new item types | Asking for the answer to each item |
| Guided | One step at a time through a type of problem | Learning a new strategy, such as working backward | Strategy steps the student cannot repeat alone |
| Full answer with critique | A worked solution with the trap explained | Reviewing missed items after a timed set | Reading solutions instead of re-solving |
A hint-first exchange
Class instructions teachers can add
Each class can carry the teacher's own instructions on top of its mode. A few that work well here:
- "During timed sets, give no help. Afterward, review missed items with hints first."
- "Name the skill each item tests, and ask the student to find a similar item."
- "Ask the student to explain the trap in their own words."
- "End review sessions with one unaided item."
Spacing the practice
Plan practice in short, spaced sessions rather than long cramming blocks, and mix skills within each set. Track unaided accuracy on new items over time; assisted accuracy flatters. A short unaided set at the start of each session works as both practice and check.
Students also see next steps such as "Recheck due" for concepts they practiced, with the dates behind each.

Questions and answers
Can AI help with SAT or ACT prep?
Yes, for reviewing mistakes after an attempt. Practice itself should be unaided and spaced: retrieval practice and spacing have strong evidence.
What is the best way to study for the SAT with AI?
Take a timed set alone, then use hints to work through missed items, then try a similar item alone.
Why not let AI explain every answer?
The test is taken without AI. Students using answer-giving AI overrated their learning in one field experiment.
