AI help for world languages: attempt first, then feedback
In a language class, the translation is the shortcut. How Nexus's class modes keep students producing the language themselves, with AI feedback on their own attempt.

Feedback on the student's own sentence
Language learning depends on producing the language, getting feedback and trying again. AI can give that feedback quickly. In a study by a German team of 459 upper-secondary students learning English, AI feedback on their essays improved revisions (d = 0.19), motivation (d = 0.36) and positive emotions (d = 0.34). The feedback was on the students' own writing.
Language learners also face a fairness problem with AI checks. Seven AI-writing detectors flagged on average 61% of essays by non-native English writers as AI-written. A detector is a poor judge of a student writing in a second language.
How the three learning modes work in world languages
Modes describe how a class is set up to respond, and students cannot change a class's mode. AI can make mistakes; before any pilot we check Hints and Guided with real models.
| Mode | What the student gets | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hints | A question about the grammar choice: "Single event or habit?" | Conjugation, tense choice, sentence building | Requests to translate whole passages |
| Guided | One step at a time through a paragraph: vocabulary, structure, verbs | Writing tasks and presentations | The AI producing sentences the student copies |
| Full answer with critique | A corrected version with an explanation of each change | Reviewing a finished draft | Students reading corrections without rewriting |
A hint-first exchange
Class instructions teachers can add
Each class can carry the teacher's own instructions on top of its mode. A few that work well here:
- "Never translate for the student. Ask for their attempt first."
- "Reply in the target language at the student's level, with English only when they are stuck."
- "Correct one error type at a time, starting with verbs."
- "End each exchange by asking the student to write a new sentence."
Checking what students can do alone
Spoken and handwritten production without help is the clearest check. Short unaided writing prompts and conversations, spread across the unit, show what students can produce on their own. Retrieval practice works for vocabulary and grammar: classroom quizzing improves learning, g = 0.50 across 222 studies.

Questions and answers
Should students use AI translators for language homework?
Not to produce the work. In a Hints class, Nexus is set up to ask for the student's attempt and give feedback on it.
Does AI feedback help language learners?
In one study of 459 upper-secondary students learning English, AI feedback improved revisions (d = 0.19) and motivation (d = 0.36).
Can AI detectors catch AI use by language learners?
They misjudge many second-language writers: seven detectors flagged on average 61% of essays by non-native English writers as AI-written.
