Syllabus AI statement for high school courses (template)

Version A: No AI

In this course, the work you submit must be your own, without AI tools. Using AI to produce or revise submitted work is a violation of [honor code]. If you are unsure whether a tool counts as AI, ask me first.

Version B: AI for practice and feedback

You may use [approved tool] to get hints, explanations and feedback on your own attempt. You may not submit answers, text or code that AI produced. Try each problem yourself before asking for help. [Optional, for classes using Nexus: This class is set to Hints mode, which you cannot change.]

Version C: AI with disclosure

You may use [approved tool] for this course, including for drafts, as long as you disclose it. With each assignment, add one or two sentences: which tool, what you used it for, and what you did yourself. You are responsible for checking anything AI produced.

Version D: AI as part of the task

Some assignments in this course require using AI and evaluating its output. For those, you will record which AI answers you accepted, revised or rejected, and why. Assignments that do not say so follow Version [B].

Lines to add to any version

  • "Who can see your AI chats: [describe]. Ask me if you are unsure."
  • "How I check whose work it is: drafts, class work, short conversations and, where the tool allows, class AI chats. I do not rely on AI detectors."
  • "Never paste passwords, other people's private information, or anything I have asked you not to share into an AI tool."

Questions and answers

What should a syllabus AI statement say?

Which AI uses are allowed, how students disclose AI use, who can see their AI chats, and how the teacher checks whose work it is.

Can different assignments in one course have different AI rules?

Yes. Many teachers state a course default and name a different level on specific assignments.

Should a syllabus mention AI detectors?

Say how you check work. Detectors misjudge many students, so many teachers state that they do not rely on them.
