Claude for Education, Claude for Teachers and Nexus
Anthropic's school products cover teachers, and consumer Claude is for adults. How students under 18 can use Claude models, and what a school product has to put in place first.
[ SUMMARY ]
The short version
Anthropic's school products cover teachers. Claude for Teachers is free for verified US K-12 educators, and students are not allowed. Consumer Claude requires users to be 18 or older. Students under 18 can reach Claude models only through a business that follows Anthropic's rules for serving minors, such as a school AI platform.
What Anthropic offers schools
Claude for Teachers launched on Jul 14, 2026, free for verified US K-12 educators, with teaching skills built with Learning Commons and an evaluation with the Detroit Public Schools Community District. On Aug 28, 2026, districts got a free managed organization with single sign-on and a K-12 data processing addendum; districts that sign up by Jun 30, 2027 get a year free.
Claude for Education offers a learning mode for universities.
Consumer Claude requires users to be 18 or older. Common Sense Media rates Claude "Moderate risk" (Mar 25, 2026). In its testing, Claude handled a crisis well within one conversation, but testers got around it with a new chat or with fiction, and it also completes homework.
How students under 18 can use Claude models
Anthropic allows teen use through a business that puts safeguards in place. Its guidelines for organizations serving minors call for age verification, moderation and monitoring, user guidance, a child-safety system prompt and a public compliance statement, and Anthropic audits customers that serve minors. Products must also tell users they are talking to an AI.
Under Anthropic's commercial terms, Anthropic does not train on customer content. Anthropic deletes API data within 30 days, and keeps flagged content for up to 2 years.
Nexus reaches Anthropic models through business APIs, not consumer accounts. Our pilot checklist puts Anthropic's safeguards for minors in place before any student starts: AI disclosure each session, moderation, a child-safety system prompt and a public compliance statement.

What to check before approving any Claude-based product for students
Anthropic's guidelines give a school a ready checklist. Ask the vendor to show you each item:
- How it checks students' ages, and where the age comes from.
- What moderation runs on student messages and on the model's replies.
- The child-safety system prompt it uses, in writing.
- How students are told they are talking to an AI, every session.
- Where its public compliance statement is posted.
- What happens when a student writes about self-harm or abuse, and who at your school is told.
Students at home
A common assumption is that students "already use Claude at home." Consumer Claude is for adults, so most high school students cannot use it on their own accounts. If your school wants students to have Anthropic's models, they need to come through a school product that meets Anthropic's minors guidelines.
