What the Khanmigo trial tells every school

Khanmigo is one of the few school AI tutors tested in a large randomized trial. Over two years in 18 Tennessee middle schools, assignment to Khan Academy with Khanmigo raised achievement by about 0.06-0.08 SD a year, similar to Khan Academy practice without AI. The median student messaged the tutor on a third of practice days.

The lesson applies to any AI tutor, Nexus included: students have to use the help, and use it well. A coach-only tutor that students ignore cannot help much. That is why Nexus pilots track whether students ask for help after their own attempt, and whether they can solve problems alone a week later.

Your curriculum or theirs

Khanmigo's strength is that it knows the Khan Academy item in front of the student. Nexus does not own your curriculum. It works on whatever assignment the student brings: a worksheet, a lab write-up, an essay prompt. Today students paste an assignment into a class chat. Canvas assignment import ships with the next release.

For a high school with its own courses, AP sections and electives, that breadth matters. For a math department built on Khan Academy, Khanmigo may be enough.

When Khanmigo may be the better fit

Your courses already run on Khan Academy content.
You want a published district price and rostering through Clever or ClassLink.
You also serve middle-school students. Khanmigo has been studied in middle schools; Nexus is for students 13 and older.
