Next release

Canvas end to end, including a school entering its own Canvas key. It is built and tested against a local Canvas simulator, and a real Canvas still has to confirm it.

Canvas's own AI, and where Nexus fits

Canvas now ships its own AI. On Apr 21, 2026, Instructure split Canvas into Core, Plus and Next tiers, each with some IgniteAI features; the IgniteAI Agent, built on Amazon Bedrock, comes with Next, and advanced AI stopped being free in the US after Jun 30, 2026. Students on Canvas Next get IgniteAI Study Tools such as summaries, quizzes and flashcards. We found no open-ended student chat in Canvas.

Nexus is the open help a student uses when stuck on a Canvas assignment, under the learning mode the teacher set for that class. In Instructure's 2026 EdTech Top 40, Google Gemini was the only large language model among the top 40 tools.

How the connection is built

Canvas tokens are encrypted with a dedicated key. Nexus checks school, membership, class and role before every school read, and a Canvas sign-in never grants school membership or a role in Nexus. The connection uses a Canvas developer key your Canvas admin creates; it does not run as an LTI tool inside Canvas.

Who administers Canvas at your school, and who approves new developer keys.
Which courses a pilot covers, and which course materials should stay out of a student-facing AI.
How your classes grade: Nexus's class grade setup reads points-based grades only.
A test plan: one teacher, one student and one unrelated account, each checking what they can see.
