What students say they are missing
Students are using AI faster than schools are teaching it. 73% of teens say they have missed key AI literacy conversations with teachers, and 35% of teens who use AI for schoolwork do not understand their school's AI rules (Common Sense Media, 2026). In RAND's 2025 surveys, 19% of students said they got teacher guidance on AI, and 35% of district leaders said they gave students AI training.
What the frameworks ask
The OECD and European Commission's AILit Framework names 19 competences. One of them reads: "Evaluate whether AI outputs should be accepted, revised or rejected." Another asks learners to choose an AI approach by comparing how systems work and where each does best.
Other frameworks point the same way. ISTE asks students to judge digital content on accuracy, validity, bias, origin and relevance. UNESCO's framework for students stresses critical judgment of AI solutions. TeachAI asks for critical review of all AI output, and Digital Promise organizes AI literacy as understand, evaluate and use.
Maryland's deadline
Maryland's AI Ready Schools Act (SB 720, 2026) requires the state to fold AI literacy into its K-12 workforce-preparation and computer science standards by June 1, 2027. Its duties fall on public school systems, which must also adopt an AI policy, name an AI coordinator and choose AI tools with a state rubric. Private schools are not named. Read AI in Maryland schools.
Five classroom routines
- Accept, revise or reject. Students log one AI answer per assignment and mark what they kept, changed or threw out, and why.
- Compare two answers. When two models disagree, students decide which is better supported. In one study, people shown disagreeing AI answers trusted the AI less but understood the topic better, more so with two answers than three.
- Spot the error. Give students an AI answer with a planted mistake and ask them to find it.
- Check the source. Any quotation, statistic or citation from AI gets checked against the original before it is used.
- Explain it back. Students explain an AI explanation in their own words, without the screen.
Teach before access
Several districts made a lesson the price of entry. Howard County, Maryland gave all its high school students Gemini from Jan 27, 2026, after an AI literacy lesson. Los Angeles Unified let students 13 and older use approved AI tools after a digital citizenship lesson, from 2023 until its 2026 pause. A first lesson can cover what the tool is, what it gets wrong, who can see the chats and what the class rules are.
Teach the limits
AI makes mistakes, and models differ. Agreement between two models is not proof that an answer is correct. Consumer AI has age rules too: consumer Claude requires users to be 18 or older, and OpenAI's consumer terms require a parent's permission for teens. Students should also know who can read what they type, in each tool they use.
Where Nexus fits
In Nexus, students can compare answers from two or three models the school allows and keep a preferred one, which turns the "compare two answers" routine into an everyday habit. Each class keeps its own learning mode, so practice still happens. We make no claim about critical thinking; we give teachers a place to practice these routines with real models.

Questions and answers
What is AI literacy for high school students?
Knowing what AI tools do, where they fail, how to judge their output, how they use data, and what rules apply. The OECD-European Commission framework includes: "Evaluate whether AI outputs should be accepted, revised or rejected."
Is AI literacy required in Maryland?
Maryland's SB 720 requires the state to fold AI literacy into K-12 workforce-preparation and computer science standards by June 1, 2027. Its duties fall on public school systems.
How do you teach students to evaluate AI answers?
Use routines: log what to accept, revise or reject; compare two answers; find a planted error; check sources; explain the answer back in your own words.
Should AI literacy come before students use AI?
Many schools do it that way. Howard County, Maryland gave high schoolers Gemini after an AI literacy lesson.
