Training teachers on AI before students use it
Teachers are being asked to set AI rules many were never trained on. A four-session plan, a teacher-only week before students, and what the research says about keeping teachers in the loop.

The training gap
Teachers are being asked to set AI rules many have never been trained on. In fall 2024, 67% of low-poverty districts had trained teachers on AI, against 39% of high-poverty districts (RAND, via Education Week). In CoSN's 2026 survey of district technology leaders, 88% of districts had at least one AI initiative, and training staff on instructional generative AI was the most common (70%). And students notice: in RAND's 2025 surveys, 19% of students said they got teacher guidance on AI.
Start with how students use AI
Training lands better when it starts from students rather than tools. 54% of US teens have used AI chatbots for schoolwork; 63% of teens who use AI for schoolwork get answers from it; and 39% feel they miss out on learning. Then show the research on what answer-giving AI does: practice scores up 48%, unaided exam scores down 17% in a high-school field experiment.
A four-session plan
- Session 1: What students do and what the evidence says. Student survey data, the answer-giving experiment, and what hint-first AI does and does not achieve.
- Session 2: Rules for your class. Choose a learning mode, write instructions, and test them with three prompts from a student account.
- Session 3: Reviewing class chats. What you can see, what students are told, and how to turn patterns into teaching instead of discipline.
- Session 4: Assessment and integrity. Assignment-level AI rules, process evidence instead of detectors, and short unaided checks.
A teacher-only week before students
Give pilot teachers a week alone with the tool before students join: set modes and instructions, try the student view, and list what is missing. In a Nexus pilot, teachers then answer a check-in of under two minutes each week, and the readout counts whether they found specific uses.
Teachers' own AI use
Teachers often learn AI on their own tools first. ChatGPT for Teachers and Claude for Teachers are free for verified US K-12 educators. Use that experience, and its limits: in Anthropic's report on how educators use Claude, drawn from about 74,000 conversations, 48.9% of grading conversations were automation-heavy, and faculty rated grading as the area where AI was least effective.
Keep people in the loop
The strongest AI results so far support the person doing the teaching. In a randomized trial with 900 tutors and 1,800 K-12 students, students whose tutors had AI advice were 4 points more likely to master topics (preprint). Training should help teachers use AI to see their students more clearly, not to step back.

Questions and answers
How should schools train teachers on AI?
Start with how students use AI and what the evidence says, then hands-on sessions on class rules, reviewing student chats and assessment design, with a teacher-only week before students join.
How many districts have trained teachers on AI?
In fall 2024, 67% of low-poverty districts had trained teachers on AI, against 39% of high-poverty districts (RAND, via Education Week).
Is there free AI for teachers?
Yes. ChatGPT for Teachers and Claude for Teachers are free for verified US K-12 educators (as of Oct 2026).
What should AI training for teachers include?
Student use data, the learning research, choosing modes and writing instructions, reviewing chats responsibly, and assignment design that does not rely on detectors.
