What teachers can see in student AI chats, tool by tool
Two AI tools can look alike and differ completely in who can read a student's chat. What teachers, admins and parents can see in each major product, as of Oct 18, 2026.
[ VISIBILITY ]
Visibility varies more than features
Two products can look alike in a demo and differ completely in who can read a student's chat. That one setting shapes student trust, family expectations and the school's legal duties. Here is what each major product says, as of Oct 18, 2026.

Web filters see more than any AI tool
Monitoring software on a school device works outside any AI product and may capture anything a student types. Securly lets admins read student ChatGPT and Gemini prompts and replies, and Lightspeed logs every prompt students send to AI tools in real time. Whatever an AI tool promises about privacy holds only inside that tool.
Why less visibility can be a feature
Students who feel watched ask fewer questions. About half of monitored high schoolers agreed they hold back their true thoughts or ideas online because they may be monitored, and 13% at monitored schools said they, or an LGBTQ student they know, had been outed by the software (CDT, via Education Week, 2022). A design paper on teacher dashboards for AI tutoring favors session summaries over raw transcripts for the same reason.
Why more visibility can be a duty
Schools also have duties that require seeing. At schools that receive federal education funds, stored chats are likely education records that parents may ask to inspect. A disclosure of abuse in a chat a teacher can read can put a mandated reporter on notice. And every school-sold student AI we reviewed routes safety alerts to an adult.
Questions to settle before students start
- Which chats can staff read, and which staff?
- Are students told, in the product and in plain words, before they start?
- Is every staff read logged, and who can see the log?
- How long are chats kept?
- What does device monitoring capture outside the AI tool?
- Who reads a message that suggests a student may be in danger?
How Nexus draws the line
Nexus has two zones. Class chats can be reviewed by the class's teachers and the school's Nexus administrators: they see the question and the final answer, not hidden reasoning, and students are told when a chat can be reviewed. Personal chats are not shown to teachers; the exceptions are a legal requirement and a parent's request to see records where the law gives parents that right. Nexus records who opened each class conversation.
[ FAQ ]
Questions and answers
Can teachers see what students ask AI?
It depends on the product. Some show teachers every student chat, some show only class chats, and some show teachers nothing. Device monitoring software may capture typing in any app.
Can teachers see student Gemini chats?
Google does not describe a teacher view. According to Flint's summary of Common Sense Media's findings, Workspace admins can search student Gemini chats in Vault.
Are student AI chats private?
Rarely completely. School tools often allow staff review, school devices may run monitoring software, and at FERPA schools parents may ask to inspect education records.
What can teachers see in Nexus?
Class chats for the classes they teach, with notice to students. Personal chats are not shown to teachers, and every staff read is logged.
