Nexus for parents
What your teen's school AI is, what teachers can and cannot see, what happens to student data, and the questions worth asking your school.

What Nexus is
Nexus is the AI your teen's school can approve for schoolwork. It is a study assistant for students 13 and older. In each class, the teacher sets a learning mode (Hints, Guided, or Full answer with critique) that students cannot change, so the AI is set up to help with the part your teen is stuck on rather than hand over finished work.
What teachers can see
Teachers can review class chats for the classes they teach, and your school's Nexus administrators can see them too. Students are told when a chat can be reviewed, and Nexus records who opened each class chat. Personal chats are not shown to teachers. The exceptions are a legal requirement and a parent's request to see records where the law gives parents that right.
Monitoring software on a school device works outside Nexus and may capture anything a student types.
What happens to your teen's data
Your school owns its data. We do not sell student data, show ads or train AI models on it, and we put that in our agreement with the school. To answer a question, Nexus sends it to an AI provider your school approved, under business terms that do not train on it by default. Students can download a copy of their own school data from Settings.
Talking with your teen about AI
Many teens use AI more than their parents realize: 51% of parents say their teen uses chatbots, against 64% of teens. 63% of teens who use AI for schoolwork get answers from it, and 39% feel they miss out on learning. A useful question at home is not "Do you use AI?" but "What did you ask it, and what did you do yourself?"
Why schools approve an AI instead of blocking it
Blocking moves AI use rather than stopping it: 44% of teens who use AI for schoolwork have had an AI tool blocked on a school network or device, and 59% of those used a personal device instead. On a personal phone, teachers see nothing and class rules do not apply. An approved AI keeps help inside the school's rules, and gives every student in an approved class the same models, whether or not their family pays for an AI subscription.
Questions to ask your school
- Which AI tools are approved for students, and in which classes?
- What can teachers see, and what are students told?
- Who reads a message that suggests a student may be in danger?
- How long is student data kept, and how do I ask to see or delete it?
If your teen needs help now
If your teen is in danger, call 911. If they are thinking about hurting themselves, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Nexus is not a crisis service.
