What is OAuth?
Definition
TechnologyOAuth
OAuth is an authorization framework that lets one application get limited access to another service on a user's behalf, without the user sharing a password.
Why it matters for schools
When an AI tool connects to an LMS, OAuth is how a student or teacher approves what the tool may read. IT should check which scopes, or permissions, a connection requests, how tokens are stored, and how access is revoked.
In Nexus
Nexus's Canvas and Blackbaud connections use OAuth, and their tokens are encrypted with a dedicated key. A sign-in through another system never grants school membership or a role in Nexus.
