Alpha School and Nexus
Alpha replaces the school day with apps and guides. Nexus is the approved AI inside the school you already run, with your teachers in charge. The facts, dated and sourced.
[ SUMMARY ]
The short version
Alpha School and Nexus are not the same kind of thing. Alpha is a chain of private schools that compresses academics into about two hours of software-led work a day. Nexus is an approved AI for the school you already run, with your teachers in charge. Parents increasingly ask about AI schools, so here are the facts, dated and sourced.
What Alpha School is
Alpha students spend about two hours each morning on adaptive software, then join afternoon workshops. The adults are "guides," and the Evanston RoundTable reports that Alpha employs no state-licensed teachers; guides need a bachelor's degree. Students work in apps such as Math Academy, AlphaRead and AlphaWrite on Alpha's TimeBack platform. We found no open chat with frontier AI models for students.
Alpha's tuition runs from $10,000 (Brownsville, Texas) to $75,000 (San Francisco and Palo Alto). Its Bethesda, Maryland K-8 campus lists $65,000. About a dozen Alpha campuses were open before fall 2026; Alpha lists 47 locations, 14 of them waitlists, and aims for about 50.
What the public results show
Alpha reports large gains from its own testing. Outside reviews of public data have been less clear:
- Preliminary 2025-26 results shown to the board of Unbound Academy, Alpha's Arizona online charter, were 10% proficient in math and 28% in English, against its targets of 60% and 65%.
- Experts told a Texas Tribune and ProPublica investigation that state data did not support Alpha's claimed gains at an Austin charter partner.
The lesson for any school considering AI claims, including ours: ask for the method, the comparison group and the raw counts before you believe a number.

Answering parents who ask about AI schools
Families near Alpha campuses, including Bethesda, will ask what your school is doing about AI. An honest answer does not need to attack anyone:
- "We use real AI, with our teachers and our rules."
- "Students get the AI models our school approves, and each class sets how much help the AI gives."
- "Teachers can review class chats, and students are told when they can. Personal chats are not shown to teachers."

If you are weighing Alpha's model for your school
2 Hour Learning, which markets Alpha's model to other schools, invites private schools to adopt it, without published terms or prices. Houston ISD began a TimeBack pilot at two elementary schools on Aug 10, 2026; the district says it costs nothing, and its teachers remain teachers of record. Adopting the model means rebuilding the school day around its apps and guides. Nexus fits the schedule, curriculum and teachers you already have.
