Chat UI

Ask for guided help, compare answers, and explore completed explanations with learning views.

Before you begin

These instructions describe the school web app. Models, actions and class access depend on school setup. Native app controls and release availability can differ.

Start with the part you do not understand#

Open the school workspace, choose your class, and ask a question. Include what you have tried and where you got stuck. Your teacher's help rules apply to the conversation, including answers from different models.

For example: “I am practicing 3x + 4 = 19. Give me one hint and ask what I would do next.” Nexus can guide the next step while leaving you to do the work. AI can still make mistakes; check its explanation and any cited sources.

Choose a model or compare explanations#

Use the model picker to choose from the options your school and class allow. Comparison is a student setting: it is available when your school administrator enables more than one model and you turn on model comparison in your own preferences. Select two or three models and send the question once. Each response stays available to read. Choose the response you want to continue before sending a follow-up.

You can also choose an aggregator model to produce an optional combined answer from the approved responses. It appears separately, so you can return to the original explanations. This adds model usage and does not verify an answer by consensus. See choosing and comparing models.

Explore a completed answer#

In the school web app, select Visualize below a completed answer. Nothing opens automatically. Auto chooses a view supported by the answer; the other controls let you explore it differently:

  • Steps breaks the passage into parts you can move through.

  • Concept map lets you select an idea, explore its connections, and read the source passage.

  • Timeline arranges dates that appear in the answer.

  • Compare presents a comparison table found in the answer.

  • Graph plots a supported polynomial written in the answer and lets you inspect values.

  • Recall cards lets you try recalling a statement before revealing it.

  • Replay moves through the explanation, with pause and navigation controls.

Use Explain in steps to open that view directly, or Off to return to the answer. These controls reorganize text that has already been released; opening them does not request another AI answer or send your answer to an illustration service.

A format needs enough source detail to work. If the answer has no dates, table, suitable equation, or recall material, Nexus explains the limitation and shows a supported view. Long answers may have partial coverage. The original answer remains available, and source passages let you check what a view is based on. A graph or recall card is a study aid, not independent verification.

Add class material#

Use Attach Files to include material you are allowed to share. File limits and available sources depend on your school setup. For shared collections, see connectors. Pages that require a separate login or block access may need another supported way to provide the material.

Use available actions#

Manage Actions shows the actions available to the conversation. A school administrator configures which actions exist for the school, and your own tool preferences decide which of the available actions appear for you. Some actions also require additional school setup:

  • Internal search uses accessible, indexed school sources.

  • Web search needs a configured search provider and school access.

  • Code execution uses the school's Python runtime for guided calculations and reviewed outputs.

  • Image generation needs an enabled image provider, class permission, and a class in Full answer with critique mode. A class in hints or guided mode is refused even when image generation is allowed for that class.

  • Custom actions and MCP depend on the connections your school has configured. In a school deployment, knowledge-base search is unavailable: the server rejects search requests, so an MCP search tool returns that refusal rather than results.

When Deep Research is available, it can make several research and tool requests for one question. It can take longer and cost more than an ordinary response. Availability in a guide does not mean that a tool is enabled in your class.

Keep track of your work#

Start a new chat from the sidebar or reopen a recent conversation. Projects group related chats, instructions, and files. Agents provide configured starting points for different tasks; they still follow applicable school rules.

Open cited sources to check the material behind an answer. Copy controls let you reuse answer text. Feedback controls, where shown, let you flag an answer for review. Sharing and downloading depend on the workspace and the selected conversation; use the control shown in your web or mobile app.

What your teacher can review#

Teachers can review the prompts and responses in school conversations for their assigned classes, including the separate model responses and a combined answer. This does not give them access to unrelated personal conversations. Use the school workspace for class work and follow your school's expectations for AI use.
