Connect a MediaWiki site
Index selected pages and categories from an accessible MediaWiki site.
An operator must configure this source in your workspace. These steps describe the connector code; they do not mean your school has connected an account.
Choose the wiki#
Use the MediaWiki connector for a wiki hosted outside Wikipedia. Enter the wiki's hostname in MediaWiki Site URL, then choose its language code, such as en or es.
The current connector uses read access through the wiki API. Its credential loader does not implement a private-wiki login. If your wiki requires authentication, ask the workspace operator to check support before you create the connection.
Select material#
Enter page names in Pages. Use names such as Course overview, not full page URLs. Enter category names in Categories to index. The connector accepts category names with or without the Category: prefix.
Choose a recursion depth to control how far the connector follows nested categories. A value of -1 means unrestricted category recursion. Use a limited depth for an initial classroom source.
Run and review#
Save the connection and wait for indexing to finish. Search for a sentence from a selected page. Open the citation and confirm that it leads to the correct wiki and language.
Check that nested categories include the material you intended. A large category tree can contain much more content than its starting page suggests.
Troubleshoot access#
If no pages appear, confirm the hostname, language, and page names. Check whether the wiki exposes its API to the indexing service. A browser login on your own computer does not authenticate the connector.
The school operator controls how indexed documents are shared in Nexus. Test those settings before students use the source.
